Bautzner Strasse 107 in Dresden, the former home and school of the dance icon Mary Wigman [1886 - Berlin, 1973] is in danger. The building, where Wigman taught, danced, choreographed, and lived from 1920 – 1942 is currently empty. If the city of Dresden does not purchase this property, the house will be sold on the open market. This historical treasure will be lost forever.
In April 2016, the non-profit organization Villa Wigman für TANZ e.V. was founded to save this building. We intend to transform Wigman’s former school into a dance production, training, and exchange center for freelance performing artists. The organization has received resounding support in Germany and abroad. Our recent project “Bautzner Strasse 107, Past Present Future” has received nationwide funding from the Federal Cultural Foundation’s grant, TANZFONDS ERBE.
By signing this petition you are convincing the city of Dresden to buy this building and invest in this historical landmark. Dresden will therefore recognize Wigman’s remarkable body of work, her international acclaim, and her irrefutable impact on dance and art in the 20th century and beyond.
Simultaneously, you are supporting the freelance dance scene in Dresden and Saxony to acquire a training, production, and exchange space and to carry on Dresden’s rich dance legacy.
